Beauty | Bourjois Rouge Velvet Lipstick

Okay, so ya'll know by now that red lipsticks are kinda a big thing with me. I've rocked one ever since I left school and was able to wear a little bit more make-up. When the Rimmel Apocalips were released what seems like a century ago, it was my real first introduction to a long wearing liquid formula lipstick - and I bloomin' loved them! Earlier this year, Bourjois released their take on the liquid lipstick so I thought I'd give one a whirl.

First things first, cute and simple packaging, just how I like it! The bottle shows the shade well and they are not too big so perfect for popping in to your handbag. When I tried the Apocalips last year, I found that they applied really easily and I couldn't pick a fault with them. However, I had a real struggle applying this to my lips. I found that I could not fill my lip shape in correctly and the edge of my lips were a bit 'blobby' and uneven. If a mistake was made (which did occur!) I found that it was super hard to correct as it dried so fast and I ended up smudging it all over my face. I was disappointed with the result so I applied a MAC Lipstick over the top; At least when that began to wear off, I had some sort of red stain underneath. I suppose that shows that it is long wearing. But I just couldn't quite get used to the smell ...

Bit a negative ninny today aren't I? Just sharing my opinion and sometimes I think it's good to hear something a bit different rather than hearing that everything is amazing. Have you tried this release? What were your thoughts? Let me know in the comments, thanks for reading!

  2. The colours gorgeous,
But if the application isn't super great it just isn't a winner for me, my lips don't like to keep gloss on them & it always tends to smudge ha!
I agree - cute packaging though!

  6. You look so bronze and beautiful Megan! I've read so many reviews of these and they really do look beautiful, but people keep mentioning the smell and I can't stand lip products which smell or taste bad! xxx

  9. This sounds exactly like the MUA matte velvet lip laquers, which I struggled with! Such a shame:(

  10. I haven't tried this but it's a shame it wasn't as good as you were hoping, the colour looks so pretty and on paper it seems like it would be a really good product. Xx

  15. I adore the apocaplips and I've been on the fence about trying these out,
perhaps I'll have a go with the more wearable nude shades
Thanks for this I appreciate it when fellow beauty bloggers don't gush about everything!

  16. I've heard so many rave reviews on these, I always find it refreshing to read a negative one just to put things into perspective. The colour I am eyeing off is the nudeish one, so hopefully it won't be as tricky to apply.

  17. I like to read the odd negative review - I don't think you've been unfair or had unreasonable expectations, you were just genuinely disappointed and I can understand why. Not tried these and I don't think I will be now! Thanks for the honest review xx

  19. The scent isn't fantastic, but I absolutely love these! I do think you have to be careful with application and build it up, like you said if you just go straight at it you can get some excess around the edges of your lips which aint pretty! I just love the colours and longevity of them though.

  22. It's such a shame you struggled with these! I personally really liked the one I have however I haven't tried any of the red shades. I'm off to have a 'sniff' of mine now as I haven't actually noticed the smell before.

  23. I never think reds works in a gloss formula, and its a shame that this didn't work for you, but I'm not surprised!

  24. I really like this! The trick, however, is that apply it with clean, dry lips. And when I say clean I mean not even lip balm or saliva. I've found that when applying this over lip balm or when I've just licked my lips, it goes patchy and blotchy. It also helps to apply it while pulling your lips taut! I hope you give it another go because I think that when I apply it like so, it is really a great product! x
